SCENE NINE: MILES’ GYM

MILES is doing CrossFit, flicking two thick ropes up and down.

KIMBERLY enters.

KIMBERLY: Hi, Miles.

MILES: What are you—? How did you know I was—?

KIMBERLY: I went to the thing with her, like you asked me to.

MILES: I know. She had a great time.

KIMBERLY: So now will you—?

MILES: She got the promotion.

KIMBERLY: Okay.

MILES: Her boss is in hospital, he had a breakdown or something. Apparently his wife found a recording of him trying to hook up with some girl …

KIMBERLY: We have common ground.

MILES: What?

KIMBERLY: Before, at the restaurant, you said we didn’t have common ground. But we do.

MILES: Have you changed your hair? You look like—

KIMBERLY: We both want you to stay alive.

MILES: Come again?

KIMBERLY: That’s our common ground. Neither of us wants you to die. Ever since the night we met, I picture situations where you’re in trouble. Maybe you’re driving, in a sort of industrial area, at night. And you see an injured bird, so you stop your car and you chase it into one of the warehouses, they’re abandoned, and you follow it but there’s a guy in the warehouse, and he jumps out behind you and gets you in a headlock and you can’t do anything and he whispers in your ear, ‘Today’s the day you die’, and then he pushes you down onto a filthy mattress and he pulls down your jeans and he starts raping you, and choking you, but he doesn’t know one important thing: I’m in the warehouse. And I walk up pretty slow behind him and I’m holding a big shard of glass and I ram it into his back and he’s screaming on the floor with the glass still in his back, and he’s begging me for mercy but I have no mercy to show him, I pick up a thing full of petrol and I splash it all over him and he’s crying, and then I say, ‘You know what, get out of here’, and he says, ‘Thank you, thank you so much’, and then I say, ‘Just kidding’, and I light a match and throw it on him. And then I pull up your pants and help you up and I say, ‘Come on, let’s get you home’.

MILES: Well. That … is common ground if ever I heard it.

KIMBERLY: And I did what you asked. So, the kiss.

MILES: You want me to kiss you, here, in the gym?

KIMBERLY: Yes.

MILES: Okay.

KIMBERLY: Really?

MILES: Sure.

KIMBERLY walks towards him. MILES leans in towards her, they are about to kiss. MILES starts laughing, working out again.

You have got to get a sense of humour!

But listen, there is one more thing you could do for me, if you wanted to. Lily won’t shut up about the weekend. Some … song you sang with her or something? Anyway. I think you should hang out with her again.

KIMBERLY: Please don’t ask me to do that.

MILES: Okay.

KIMBERLY: But can I see you again?

MILES: I don’t think Lily would be cool with us hanging out. Listen, it’s up to you.
